An energy-efficient high data-rate 915 MHz FSK wireless transmitter for medical applications

In this paper, we present an energy efficient ISM-band 915 MHz transmitter in 130 nm CMOS technology for short-range wireless body sensor applications. This transmitter is a part of bidirectional medical transceiver system and is based on a new efficient frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulation technique, which results in improvement in data-rate and power consumption. The amplitude of the generated FSK signal was decreased for short distance transmission to further reduce the energy consumption and the chip area was saved by using only one on-chip inductor. An energy consumption of 0.42 nJ/b was achieved at data rate of 4 Mb/s, with 5.4 % FSK error and current of 1.4 mA from a 1.2 V supply.
