Traffic engineering practice and the road traffic code

The Road Traffic Code has significant effects on the modus operandi of the traffic practitioner in the privileges allowed to employees of Local and other level of Governments while undertaking their duties. More importantly the Code has restraints and liberties which can be exploited by those involved in traffic to maximise the effect of treatments for the pedestrian, cyclist or the motor vehicle. In this regard the paper deals with the Code's involvement in sign erection, parking, provision of special lanes, speed limits and design layouts.
