NEXT STOP, BUS RAPID TRANSIT : ACCELERATING NEW YORK'S BUS SYSTEM INTO A NEW CENTURY

This study focused on determining suitable characteristics for a bus rapid transit (BRT) system in New York City and identifying candidate projects that could be considered for immediate implementation. It begins with an overview of the components of BRT systems. Two promising immediate opportunities for BRT in New York City are then introduced. The study next recommends a process of upgrading existing bus services by adopting BRT technologies and strategies appropriate to each type of service. The primary need for successful implementation of the service enhancements are interagency and interdepartmental cooperation and problem solving.
