MASSIVE HEPATIC NECROSIS following general anesthesia*

The history of this complaint dated back to World War I1 when he was struck by a truck which injured both lower extremities. He was hospitalized and treated at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, in 1946. Since that time he had a stasis dermatitis of the left leg. He reported superficial ulcerations w i t h chronic drainage for the past 3 years. There was no history of fever or chills. For the past 4 years he had noted, in the right side of his neck, a swelling which had slowly increased in size. He denied symptoms suggestive of hyperthyroidism or airway obstruction, but added that he was “bothered” by the mass and would like i t removed.
