This paper discusses the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) first station to be built between two operating stations while concurrently maintaining passenger service. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2001 and is expected for completion in 2004. The various project challenges such as architectural and engineering design features, the connectivity complexes, the innovative funding approach, and cut-over staging plans to the operating envelopes are covered in this paper.
