Application of multi grade fuzzy approach to compute the circularity index of manufacturing organizations

Abstract Globally the transition from the linear (take-make-dispose) model of the economy to adopting circular economy principles and strategies is highly felt. The circularity of an organization depends on restorative or regenerative usage of industrially symbiotic systems by intention and design, uses and reuses natural materials to a greater extent in its manufacturing of products, and finds value throughput across the product life cycles. A tool to measure the circularity organizations is the need of the hour to accelerate the adoption of circularity principles by any organization in their transformation process from linear to circular. To full fill, this requirement, an organizational circularity assessment interface model using a multi-grade fuzzy approach was developed in this study. This is followed by the substitution of the data gathered from a manufacturing organization. Based on the computation of the circularity index, the areas for improvement have been identified, and suggestions will be provided to improve the circularity of the organization. The circularity assessment tool developed in this study could be used easily as an evaluation kit by any organization.
