Research in Lesbian Communities

In this paper the authors address the three major areas in which ehtical dilemmas may be experienced by those who do research in lesbian communities: (1) confidentiality, (2) anonymity, and (3) professional boundaries. Lesbian researchers who use the most common method of gathering data on lesbians- the snowball sampling technique- may encounter ehtical dilemmas when conducting research in lesbian communities. In addition, the authors identify related questions that lesbian investigators must consider. Possible solutions to these dilemmas include expanding the sampling frame, using more explicit consent forms, and honoring the power and privilege inherent in the professional role as researcher.
