and the diversity of systems to which it can be applied. Several exercises are suggested throughout the text for the reader to test his understanding. The writing is for the most part clear and concise, although at times repetitive. There are unfortunately a few instances in which mildly awkward grammar spoils the elegance of the presentation. The only real criticism I have is that the number of actual experimental results that are discussed is rather limited. The chapter on twodimensional electronic spectroscopy is a scant eight pages long and could have easily been expanded. Nevertheless, this monograph imparts a sound conceptual basis that will enable the diligent reader to understand the extensive and rapidly growing body of literature in the field.
