Since 1999, the objective “Sustainable Development” has been incorporated within the Swiss Constitution. As sustainable development focuses on the living space of humans, spatial planning plays an important role in the implementation process. How do we know if spatial development is sustainable? Indicator- based models appear to be the appropriate tool for measuring sustainable spatial development. Although sustainability indicators can describe the various aspects of spatial development, there are very few quantitative target values or critical values for crosschecking. As a result, comparing bordering and similarly structured regions may help. The benchmarking method facilitates an intercantonal comparison of the sustainability of spatial development in Switzerland, and thus of the success of the cantonal structure planning.
