Data access in a heterogeneous computer network

This paper reviews problems and possible design concepts for a remote data access system in a heterogeneous computer network. The possible system architectures are considered and analysed with regard to their influence on a higher level protocol. It also stresses the goals of the solutions with respect to incompatibilities between data management systems, and the way in which these goals are met. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed approaches are discussed for different network environments.
