Juvabione and its analogues. IV.' Isolation, identification, and occurrence of juvabione, juvabiol, and epijuvabiol from the whole wood of Abies lasiocarpa

Juvabione (1), 1′Z-dehydrojuvabione (10a), 1′E-dehydrojuvabione (10b), juvabiol (3), epijuvabiol (6), and the epimeric 2′-dehydrojuvabi-1′-ols (11) occur in the whole wood of a number of North American Abieslasiocarpa trees. Wide variability of occurrence of these juvabione analogues and other previously characterized extractives is noted. The co-occurrence of 1 and 6, with opposite configurations at C-1′, as shown by 13C nmr indicates the necessity of accurately determining the complete structure of naturally occurring compounds even if isolated from the same source.
