Total productive maintenance practices in manufacturing organisations: literature review

To stay competitive in today's adverse business climate requires a keen understanding of the intricate dynamics of the production facility. It has been well established that productive success in contemporary manufacturing scenario depends upon implementation of multiple complimentary and proven quality improvement strategies. As organisations in today's highly challenging scenario have moved to reduce costs and improve quality and responsiveness, the reduction in inventory and excess capacity have revealed serious weaknesses in traditional maintenance programmes. The wave of change has drastically transformed role of maintenance function in the organisations. While just-in-time and total quality control programmes have been around for a while, industries have only recently become aware of the necessity of total productive maintenance (TPM). The successful manager must know-how to use TPM to develop employee involvement in every step of the manufacturing process and facilities maintenance to optimise production flow, increase product quality and reduce operating costs. Thus, in today's competitive environment TPM can prove to be an effective global strategy, for manufacturing organisations, rendering firms a consistent enhancement of performance. The objective of this paper is to describe contemporary TPM practices for increasing productivity and product quality while streamlining production for achieving strategic core competencies.
