Preparation and Magnetic Properties of Ball-Milled and Subsequently Hot Pressed Fe77Al2.14Ga0.86P8.4C5B4Si2.6 Bulk Metallic Glass

Ball milling of glassy melt-spun ribbons and subsequent consolidat i n of the resulting powder in the supercooled liquid region were used to prepare bulk glassy Fe77Al 2.14Ga0.86P8.4C5B4Si2.6 discs with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. The hig h stability against crystallization together with the low viscos ity of the alloy in the temperature range of the supercooled liquid region allow the preparation of bulk samples by hot pressing of the powder while maintaining the glassy nature of the sample. The stre ss introduced into the material by ball milling leads to an increase of the coercivity from about 5 10 Am for the melt-spun ribbon to about 2200 2500 Am -1 for 1 hour ball-milled powder. Subsequent annealing of the ballmilled powder in the supercooled liquid region leads to a decrease of th coercivity by a factor of 10. The bulk samples prepared by combination of ball-milling of the crushe d ribbons and hot pressing show a coercivity of about 120 140 Am .
