Modern developments in particle image velocimetry

Abstract This paper summarises the development of particle image velocimetry (PIV) over the last decade and describes its applications as an effective measuring technique for mapping complex flow fields. A review of work in the field is given. Current aerodynamic and hydrodynamic investigation by the authors exploiting the method are described and used as illustration.
