Crystallography of martensitic transformation in TiNi single crystals

Abstract The crystallography of the cubic-to-monoclinic stress-induced martensitic transformation in a Ti-49.8at%Ni alloy was studied using single crystals. Experimental results were compared with predictions of phenomenological crystallographic theory. Simultaneously, we measured most of the usual crystallographic parameters: habit plane, orientation relationship, magnitude and direction of shape strain. With some deviations, for { 0.72053 , 1, 1}〈011〉 Type II twinning, we found consistency between theory and experiment for all the parameters, A possible origin for the deviations is also discussed.
