Proper orthogonal decomposition and low dimensional models for turbulent flows

Turbulente stromingen komen we veelvuldig tegen in ons dagelijks leven. Denk maar aan de rook van een sigaret, of het roeren in een kopje koffiee. In deze turbulente stromingen zijn vaak structuren herkenbaar, meestal wervelachtige structuren. Het is moeilijk om deze structuren wiskundig te defieren. Een methode hiervoor is de zogenaamde Proper Orthogonal Decompsition (POD). Deze methode bepaalt tijdsonafhankelijke stromingspatronen (POD eigenfuncties) die veel energie bezitten. Dat betekent dat ze structuren bezitten die vaak voorkomen in de (tijdsafhankelijke) turbulente stroming waarvan ze bepaald zijn. ... Zie: Samenvatting
