Analysis of Relationships between Aviation Maintenance Error Modes and Their Causes Based on Grey Relational Analysis Method

A new method is proposed to analyze the relationship between aviation maintenance error modes and their causes,based on the framework of HFACS-ME and the method of grey relational analysis.Following the two directions of "Mode-Cause" and "Cause-Mode",and taking "Skill/Technique Error" and "Adverse Physical State" as examples,the relationship between aviation maintenance error modes and their causes are analyzed with the proposed method.It shows that the main error causes for "Skill/Technique Error" are Workspace Confining,Inadequate Training/Preparation,Equipment Damaged/Unserviced,Adverse Physical State,Adverse Mental State,Workspace Obstructed;and the main error modes susceptible to "Adverse Physical State" are Attention/Memory Error,Judgment/Decision Error,Skill/Technique Error.It is concluded that grey relational analysis is an effective and practical technique to analyze the relationship between aviation maintenance error modes and their causes.
