Intelligent transportation systems - travelers' information systems the case of a medium size city

Intelligent transportation systems and associated travelers' information systems can dramatically influence the way people decide to travel, thus the way of living in urban areas. In this paper a bus arrival time prediction and the associated travelers' information system of a medium size city is presented. The system uses the latest GPS technology for automatic bus location and GPRS technology for communications. The real time availability of all buses' exact locations and speeds enables the system to have very clear traffic information of the city's main streets and to predict arrival times with satisfactory accuracy. Some financial aspects of the project are discussed as well.
