The 49th Annual Meeting of the American Pancreatic Association in Collaboration With the International Association of Pancreatology.

The 49th annual meeting of American Pancreatic Association (APA) was held at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami, Florida, on October 31 to November 3, 2018. The 2018 meeting was in collaboration with the International Association of Pancreatology (IAP). It was one of the largest gatherings of the society with 494 registrants and 296 abstracts presented from 24 countries. The program is available at the APA website (http://www. american-pancreatic-association.org/index.php/annual-meeting/ previous-programs). The abstracts from the meeting were published in Pancreas. The 2018 premeeting was a combined APA/IAP symposium focused on pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer–induced diabetes. The program was organized by the respective society presidents, Dr Darwin L. Conwell and Dr Suresh T. Chari. The symposium focused on the pathogenesis of diabetes: the interplay between insulin resistance, β-cell dysfunction, pancreatic cancer–related diabetes mellitus, acute pancreatic and chronic pancreatitis–related diabetes mellitus, and the exocrine process. The premeeting symposium was followed by the Hirshberg Symposium onmicrobiome and pancreatic cancer moderated by Drs O. Joe Hines and Ashok K. Saluja. Dr Christian Jobin discussed the far-reaching impact of international microbiota in cancer. Drs George Miller and Vikas Dudeja focused on pancreatic cancer and the gut microbiome connection. The 2018 Vay Liang and Frisca Go Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr Martin Lewis Freeman from the University of Minnesota. Dr Freeman is the 23rd awardee since the award was established in 2001. The 2018 APA Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr Dana K. Andersen from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health. The 2018 IAP Palade Prize was awarded to Professor Markus Lerch from the University of Greifswald. Their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to pancreatology are detailed hereinafter. The Frank Brooks State of the Art Lecture was given by Dr Timothy Wang of Columbia University, who spoke about the role of nerves and inflammation in pancreatic cancer. The PaulWebster Clinical State of theArt Lecture was given by Dr Nageshwar Reddy from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology. His lecture was on pancreatobiliary endoscopy. The other key highlight of this year's meeting was the Women in Pancreas reception. The meeting was cochaired by Drs Aida Habtezion, Sulagna Banerjee, and Aliye Uc.
