A numerical analysis of freezing and melting with convection

An explicit finite element algorithm is presented for the solution of the basic equations describing combined conductive and convective transfer of heat in materials which may undergo a liquid/solid change of phase. The method is used to analyse the influence of natural convection on the process of freezing and melting in a cylindrical thermal cavity. The results produced in the case of freezing are shown to agree qualitatively with experimental observations.
