Usability Goals Setting Tool

Usability goals are often the basis on which usabi lity evaluations are done. Multi-disciplinary software development teams , interaction designers, software engineers and business analysts among them , n ed to agree on a common set of goals before they design and evaluate interactive products. However, teams often struggle to set clear, measura ble usability goals and all members may not be on the same page even late in th e project. This paper proposes Usability Goal setting Tool (UGT), a tool meant to help design teams set, prioritise and evaluate usability goals. UGT h elps the designer to create profiles for the product and its users. Based on th ese inputs, UGT provides examples and guidelines to prioritize the usability goals. UGT also suggests evaluation ideas for each goal. Prototypes of UGT w ere improved through formative evaluations by using it for 15 interactio n design projects. Summative evaluations were done by applying UGT on 49 industr y projects. Participants found UGT to be useful and systematic and said they would use it in their next project.
