In this paper, effects of geometric parameters of dies and material on die stress in hot forging of aluminum fixed scrolls are investigated using a finite element simulation technique. The cause of die fracture occurring in hot forging of an aluminum fixed scroll is introduced, emphasizing that the die fracture occurs due to bending stress in tension at the root of the die. Finite element predictions for various titled angles of die and material to induce the metal flow into difficult-to-fill region are considered and they were analyzed to reveal their effects on the die stress near the fracture point. It was shown that optimized material and die parameters can be helpful to prevent premature of unpredicted die fracture in this process.
