, Mishkin M:Comparison of superior temporal and inferior prefrontal lesions on auditory and non-auditory tasks in rhesus monkeys.

Abstract Monkeys with damage either to primary auditory cortex (area TC), surrounding cortex (area TA), or both, were tested on a series of auditory and non-auditory problems. With minor exceptions, only animals with the combined lesions showed impairments, including a loss in the retention of an auditory frequency differentiation, an elevation of frequency discrimination thresholds, and mild deficits on two visual learning tasks. There was a clear difference between this pattern of impairment and that following inferior prefrontal lesions in an earlier study involving the same series of tests. Whereas the impairment after prefrontal damage was attributable to a non-sensory disorder characterized by perseverative interference, the effects of superior temporal damage were consistent with a disturbance in the auditory process itself together with a minor loss in visual function.
