Abstract In this paper we discuss the convergence of business systems like TQM and 6sigma, Information Technology and Process Systems Engineering. We propose that the proper framework advancing the conflux of these ideas is provided by distributed network computing. We furthermore suggest that the integrated systems of software, hardware and physical devices should be viewed as a complex adaptive system which is ever changing in non-predicable ways. The prospect of embedding such a system into a rigid, hierarchical and centralized computational structure is therefore dim. In the paper we discuss very briefly the emergence of a theory for complex adaptive systems. We outline the basic tenets of business finance and emphasize the importance of using value analysis for strategic decision making. We motivate a network model for the value chain and relate this to an electrical circuit description. This description allows us to draw conclusions about stability and optimality which are not pursued further in this paper. We also describe very briefly the basis for evaluating business performance, process and product development and risk. These activities are supported by case studies. We finish by reviewing very briefly how the drive towards excellence can make it easier for universities and industry to carry out cooperative R&D.
