Planning options for the improvement of rural accessibility: Use of the time-space approach

Nutley S. D. (1985) Planning options for the improvement of rural accessibility: use of the time-space approach, Reg. Studies 19, 37–50. Using a time-space approach, it is explained how the evaluation of current accessibility problems in rural areas can be carried forward into planning ‘solutions’. Forty planning options are presented for improving access standards in a small case study area in rural Wales. These include conventional bus services, various ‘unconventional modes’ and several ‘non-transport solutions’, plus combinations of these. Social benefits of each plan are expressed by the additional accessibility provided; hence costs and benefits can be presented in a comparable manner, and the most appropriate options recommended.
