The paper provides an interpretation of the ISO 9001 model for quality assurance in a university environment. The objective is to prepare a framework for successful documentation and implementation of a quality system based on the ISO 9000 international standards in education. The systems approach to quality assurance and the concept of a university production system furnish the basis for a consistent interpretation of all twenty elements of ISO 9001 (1994). An interpreted quality system can then be established in any department, faculty or university seeking explicit quality assurance, i.e. providing confidence to customers that their requirements for quality are met.
