Detection of Biological Agents

Early detection of a biological attack could enable the preparedness community to treat the exposed and protect the unexposed to significantly reduce the number and severity of casualties. Methods to detect a bioterrorist attack can either focus on the detection of clouds that could potentially be biological aerosols or rely on more sophisticated techniques that probe a given sample for particular biological agents, distinguishing harmful microbes from nonpathogenic ones. Alternatively, an early warning that a biological attack has occurred could be accomplished by monitoring patterns in such data as hospital records, tollbooth receipts, or animal deaths.
