SEGMENTATION BY ACTIVE CONTOURS AND LEVEL SETS AND ITS APPLICATION IN MEDICAL IMAGES

Image segmentation is a fundamental issue in biomedical imaging area. This can be exploited in the images to evaluate therapeutic effect or evolution of the disease. The segmentation process can be carried out manually or automatically. The manual segmentation requires experts and is an exhaustive process, while automatic techniques usually apply evolving interfaces dynamically adaptable to the desired features contained in the image. We practice the segmentation procedure by the active contour model formulated in level set framework which is one of the most successful image segmentation techniques.With the final level sets obtained from the segmentation process, it is possible to analyze some information of detected structures such as area, volume, and 3-D reconstruction.
