Wideband Reflectarray and Transmitarray Designs Using Polarization Rotating Unit Cells

We demonstrate the use of polarization rotating (PR) unit cells in designing wideband reflectarray (RA) and transmitarray (TA) antennas. A reflective/transmissive PR unit cell and its mirror image can provide 1-bit phase quantization over a very wide frequency range. The PR unit cells were used to design a RA and TA antennas, both with aperture dimensions of $30 \times 30$ cm$^{2}$ and focal lengths of 30 cm, for operation at X-band. The fabricated RA and TA antenna prototypes provided a maximum realized gain of 24.5 dBi, 3-dB gain bandwidths of up to 40%, and polarization purity and side lobe levels of better than 11.5 dB.
