Channel Coding and Modulation for Digital Television

Two major exciter functions are required to convert the digital input signal from the transport layer to an on-channel RF signal for use as a drive signal for the power amplifier: (1) channel coding and modulation, and (2) upconversion and linear amplification. Further details of the these functions are now discussed. These functions are further subdivided into data synchronization, channel encoding, sync and pilot insertion, Nyquist filtering or spectral shaping, and quadrature modulation.
