Research and scale model test on the local stability of steel box arch segment of Lupu Bridge

Publisher Summary The chapter explores the research and scale model test on the local stability of the steel box arch segment of Lupu bridge. Shanghai Lupu Bridge is the largest half-through composite-system steel arch bridge in the world. The main arch and the main beam are all of steel box section. A scale model test on the local stability of the steel arch segment is made to get the mechanism, mode, and actual safety factor of the local stability of the plates. Besides that, theoretical calculation is also done to compare with the result of the test. The chapter provides useful guidelines for the safe design of the local stability of the steel arch of Lupu Bridge and the similar steel bridges. Besides calculations of load-carrying capacity and global stability, analysis of local stability should be done on the arch ribs that mainly support compression force.
