Juvenile fibroadenoma of the breast.

A 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL had a 1-year history of rapid unilateral and painless enlargement of the right breast. Hormonal assays results were normal. A clinical examination revealed massive enlargement of the right breast (Fig 1). Results of an ultrasound-controlled fine-needle aspiration biopsy suggested the diagnosis of juvenile fibroadenoma. The patient underwent resection of the tumor, which weighed 3020 g, in combination with unilateral reduction mammaplasty with a superior-based pedicle for the nipple-areola complex technique. Residual breast parenchyma was preserved to allow future breast development. Histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of juvenile fibroadenoma. At 18 months after histologic examination, the patient is symptomfree and has had no recurrence. Although the aesthetic result is not ideal (Fig 2), the patient is satisfied and declines further cosmetic revision. Note that the preoperative postural compensation for the weight of the asymmetric appendage is absent after its removal.
