Anisotropic Diffusion-based Enhancement of Old Historical Photos related to Romanian Centenary

This paper is dedicated to the Centenary of Great Romanian Union, disseminating an image enhancement technique that is able to restore properly the old pictures printed in the interwar period and describing World War I events. The proposed restoration technique is based on a nonlinear second-order anisotropic diffusion model that removes effectively the additive and multiplicative noise, and also overcomes the unintended effects, while preserving the photo's details. A numerical approximation scheme is constructed for solving this PDE-based model and many results of our tests are provided.
