Near-field optics seen as an antenna problem

We discuss the application of metal nanostructures for the fabrication of resonant optical antennas. Inspired by radio-wave technology, specially-shaped metal particles separated by a small feed gap are shown to yield very high local confinement and enhancement of the optical fields in the gap. Recent progress in fabrication and application is reviewed.
