Emotionen psychiatrischer Patienten während der Fixierung // Emotions in psychiatric patients under mechanical restraint

Emotions in psychiatric patients under mechanical restraint. Objective: Studies systematically exploring patients’ feelings under coercive measures are scarce. Methods: Twelve patients with different diagnoses and sufficient orientation were investigated by a self-designed 20-item questionnaire and visual analogue scales (VAS) concerning emotions and insight during mechanical restraint by belts. Results: According to VAS median scores, powerlessness, depressiveness and aggression predominated in the critically ill sample. Anxiety and disapproval of the fixation were reported to a lesser extent, whereas patients’ feeling of illness was expressed weakly. Correlations between corresponding dimensions of the questionnaire and VAS were mostly pronounced for depressiveness (R = 0.8) but also for powerlessness and aggression (R = 0.5). Data showed high interindividual variability. Conclusion: In a diagnostic heterogeneous sample, the dimension depressiveness was notable and veri fied by a high correlation between the measuring instruments. Fear under mechanical restraint was pronounced less which might be related to the concept of psychiatric intermediate care. J Neurol Neurochir Psychiatr 2018; 19 (1): 20–6.
