An Integrated Medical-Dental Electronic Health Record Environment: A Marshfield Experience

National investments in biomedical science and other scientific studies are helping us to better understand the interrelationships between oral and systemic disease. The large number of interrelationships being studied suggests that medicine’s historic neglect of the oral cavity and dentistry’s limited understanding of systemic nature should be addressed. While the emerging science base has implications for medical and dental training programs, it is important to consider approaches to facilitate translation and adoption of scientific advances by those currently practicing in dentistry and medicine.
