Feasibility of a nuclear siting policy based on the expansion of existing sites. [USA]

This study answers the specific question, can the projected growth in nuclear generating capacity from 1988 to 1998 be met by expansion of existing sites. To examine the feasibility of such a siting policy the nuclear generating capacity planned by utilities for the 1988-1998 time frame was allocated to existing sites - these allocations matched the expected load growth but were otherwise unconstrained. Limitations on water, land, transmission corridors, and radiological impact constraining this expansion were examined. The impact of an existing-site policy on regions having no present plans for nuclear energy was examined and federal legislative and regulatory impediments to an existing-site policy were reviewed.
