A Generic Catalog and Repository Service for Virtual Machine Images

The widespread usage of virtualization has caused a major impact in disparate areas such as scientic computing, industrial busi- nesses and academic environments. This has led to a massive production of Virtual Machine Images (VMIs). The management of this broad spec- trum of VMIs should consider the variety of operating systems, appli- cations and hypervisors. This paper describes the developments towards a catalog and repository system for VMIs. Using the industry standard Open Virtualization Format (OVF) the system oers indexing and stor- age capabilities of VMIs as well as user-oriented matchmaking algorithms to leverage VMI sharing.
