Image Processing in a Production Environment

Advances in the semiconductor industry have had a tremendous impact on the field of image processing. Within a few years industrial image processing has found its way from crude binary systems, that were extremely sensitive to changing light conditions, to rugged industrial systems processing grey level images at rates of several hundred millions of instructions per second. Image processing techniques that once took several minutes to perform under laboratory conditions, can now be processed in real-time in industrial applications. This paper will briefly discuss the development of image processing in the past and will then give a short introduction to image processing techniques, so that the unfamiliar reader may be able to appreciate the potential that image processing might have in his area of research. The emphasis of this contribution, however, will be on current research activities and on the different industrial applications, such as quality control, material flow and robotics, to mention but a few. Finally an outlook is presented on future trends and developments in industrial image processing.
