Ultra fast PMSM drive for turbo-blower application

In this paper, a sensorless vector control method is implemented to drive a ultra fast PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motor) for blower applications. At the very high speed, the rotor position obtained by transducers such as resolvers or encoders does not have enough accuracy. Although it could find the position, there are always significant errors between the actual angle and the estimated one. Therefore, a vector control method without any position sensor is used for driving PMSM in this paper. However, at the very low speed, the angle error estimation method is poor at measuring the position of rotor. Hence the open-loop control is used to start the PMSM up to 6,000 r/min and then sensorless closed-loop vector control is applied for the speed above. The experimental system has been built and tested for the 2-pole surface mounted PMSM at the speed of 100,000 r/min with 300 VDC and 1.67 kHz of excitation frequency.
