Performance analysis of voice services in hybrid fiber/coax networks

This paper investigates quality-of-service (QoS) performance of voice services in hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks. We focus on the upstream channel and the performance of the system is evaluated in terms of voice packet loss probability. Two different classes of voice services are considered. For voice without speech activity detector (SAD), there is no packet dropping and hence the analysis is trivial. For voice with SAD, we develop an elaborate discrete-time Markov chain model to obtain the voice packet dropping probability. We also describe the voice traffic models and the performance measures, and include an overview of the media access (MAC) protocol. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the performance the system.
