Energy Transduction in Algal Phototaxis

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses energy transduction in algal phototaxis. There are two types of responses, phobophototaxis and topophototaxis, of a freely moving organism to a light stimulus. In phobotaxis, the organism detects temporal changes in light intensity, whereas topophototaxis involves the orientation of the organism with respect to the direction of light rays. A phototaxigraph provides accurate measurement of phototactic rates. Under constant light conditions, changes in intensity occur as a result of the eyespot casting a shadow upon a photosensitive portion of the organism. Light intensity is not the controlling factor in determining positive and negative behavior in short term experiments, but the cultural conditions, particularly ion balance, are involved. The on-lag responds to light intensity in the same way as topotaxis, and perhaps a portion of the lag period is because of the time required for the organisms to achieve the proper orientation with respect to the light. Studies with uncouplers of phosphorylation provide support for the linking of photokinesis and cyclic photophosphorylation but are somewhat equivocal with respect to supporting the proposed relation between phobotaxis and electron transport. For example, it is found that some uncoupling agents affect phobotaxis more than they do photokinesis
