A study on the layout and ratio change characteristics of a dual-cavity half-toroidal CVT

Abstract A half-toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT) was developed in 1999 for the first time anywhere in the world for application to passenger cars. In the half-toroidal variator unit, both the upper and lower linkages of the trunnions are coupled longitudinally to secure sufficient stiffness and strength for greater reliability. At the same time, this design also improves ratio change performance.
