A Study of English- Chinese Summative Discourse Markers from a Typology Perspective

English- Chinese summative discourse markers are one of the frequently used linguistic expressions in verbal communication,which possess a variety of semantic relations as well as pragmatic functions. Based on the corpus,the research shows that the distribution of discourse makers is relatively fixed but with aprototype pattern. And there exist five semantic relations as intensification,cause and effect, adversative between the front and the subsequent discourses from a semantic aspect. Meanwhile,it embodies concluding,explicating and interactive function in the discourse construction from a pragmatic aspect. The findings may help to perceive their internal mechanisms,and facilitate the acquisition of two summative discourse markers.
