An improved BEB algorithm for MAC protocol of underwater sensor networks

Underwater Sensor Networks are typically distributed in nature and the nodes communicate using acoustic waves over a wireless medium. Such networks are characterized by long and variable propagation delays, intermittent connectivity, limited bandwidth and low bit rates. Due to the wireless mode of communication between the sensor nodes, a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is required to coordinate access to the shared channel and enable efficient data communication. However the existing BEB algorithm for MAC protocol is not so efficient in undewater water sensor network communication. In this paper, the disadvantage of the existing BEB algorithm is disscussed and an improved BEB algorithm is proposed according to the acoustic channel characters of long propagation delay and limited bandwidth. The simulation results on OPNET show that using the enhanced protocol the throughput of the networks is improved, as well as the media access delay and other performance.
