COFDM. An alternative strategy for future-generation mobile communications

Future generations of mobile radio systems, such as the mobile broadband system (MBS), will be required to provide data rates of 2Mb/s and above and it is the dispersive characteristics of the mobile radio channel that will play a key role in determining the most suitable, cost-effective, radio interface solution. The purpose of this paper is to consider the potential of multi-carrier multiple-access techniques as a means of providing a versatile high data rate radio interface for both terrestrial and satellite mobile PCS. After describing the two main forms of multiple-access multi-carrier systems that have been proposed recently, CDMA-OFDM and DS-CDMA, the paper will describe a new variant of multi-access multi-carrier system called LROCC-OFDM (low-rate orthogonal convolutional codes-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing).
