Late cardiac perforation after transcatheter closure of an atrial septal defect using the Amplatzer septal occluder

The transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects (ASD) is routinely used as an alternative to surgery in children and adults. We report a patient with severe pericardial effusion as a consequence of left atrial and aortic walls perforation occurring 4 years after implantation of an Amplatzer Septal Occluder. Urgent cardiac surgery was carried out, the device was removed and the perforations of aortic wall and left atrium were repaired.
