Catch-up Process in Aircraft Industry: A Model Based on Experiences of Six Latecomer Countries

Thisarticlepresentsastaircasemodelforthecatch-upprocessintheaircraftindustrybasedonReverse ProductLifeCycle(RPLC).Themodeliscomposedoffiveconsecutivephases:(1)maintenance andrepair;(2)licensedproduction;(3)enhancingtechnologicalcapabilities;(4)independentaircraft developmentfrombehindthetechnologyfrontier;and(5)independentaircraftdevelopmentatthe technologyfrontier.Inordertoproposethismodel,thecatch-upprocessesintheaircraftindustry insixlatecomercountries(Brazilasasuccessfulcase,JapanandChinawhicharestillinthecatchupprocessandRomania,IndonesiaandArgentinaasunsuccessfulcases)werestudied.Thentheir activitiesinthecatch-upprocesswerecategorizedbasedonMilesandHuberman’sdataanalysis method.Finally,thecatch-upprocessesofallsurveyedcountrieswereconsideredonthesametimeline, togainabetterperceptionaboutdynamicsofdifferentphasesofthecatch-upprocessintheaircraft industry.Thissuggestedsomeideasabout:(1)overlapsbetweendifferentphases;(2)relativesize ofdifferentphases;and(3)differentpossibleroutesbetweenphases.Itwasalsoconcludedthatin theaircraftindustry,evolutionbasedonsequentialstepsismoresuccessfulthanjumpingbetween differentsteps.Thevalidityofthemodelischeckedbyitsconformitywithotherstudiesoncatch-up models.Inaddition,thecatch-upprocessesofallsurveyedcountriesweresuccessfullymappedto theproposedmodel.
