Assessment of effectiveness of the use of RFID technology in selected processes at DIY retail store

The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of RFID technology in selected processes at store with construction materials of the one of DIY retail network in Poland. During the research, author was focused on examination the effectiveness of the use of RFID tags and determination the efficiency of the process compared with traditional barcodes or manually performed actions. For the purpose of the study, 120 000 items within the store had been marked with RFID tags, all hardware components of the system were selected and connected with the existing IT environment through the use of dedicated applications and interfaces. Results of this study confirmed the high efficiency of RFID technology while pointing to problematic areas and products, requiring individual approach and carry out further tests. The study also showed "weaknesses" on the side of the retail network, which in the case of a decision to the full implementation must be subjected to a thorough change. Among of these areas the most important are: IT environment, construction of trolleys, the design of some of the shelves and the course of selected processes.
