Classifying the nature of lecturer intervention on computer science student behaviour

A key challenge for computer science educators is providing effective support and feedback to students, to ensure they are engaged with the course. Due to the significant problems of scale that need to be addressed, effective lecturer intervention is difficult, and at the same time the effect of intervention is challenging to measure accurately. In this short paper, we report on the outcomes of a systematic literature review focused on interventions in Computer Science classrooms. To provide an understanding of the types of interventions possible in a Computer Science course, we propose a taxonomy of intervention types with low mutual information and classify the 130 selected papers based on it. We present an analysis of the co-occurrence of some intervention types and the evolution of intervention type popularity over the years.
